A custom sock packaging specification converts a buyer's selected packaging configuration into one controlled pack-out that can be quoted, sampled, approved, packed, and inspected. Keep it separate from the sock construction specification. Its scope is the journey from a folded pair through the sealed shipping carton, including the controls intended to address identified shipping risks.
Avoid undefined instructions such as *standard packing*, *retail-ready*, or *shipping-safe*. For every packaging field, state whether it is buyer-defined, supplier-proposed and subject to written approval, or not applicable.

**Methodology:** Derive the pack-out from buyer-controlled inputs: the sellable quantity, fold and presentation requirements, SKU allocation, destination constraints, carton limits, and identified handling risks. Record each input's source and revision, then reconcile the unit, inner-pack, and carton counts before approving a production sample.
**Limitations and items to verify:** Before issuing an RFQ or purchase order, the buyer's responsible logistics and compliance owners must verify destination-market labeling content, carrier limits, carton-size limits, gross-weight limits, handling conditions, required test procedures, and any pallet requirements. A photograph or physical sample confirms visible configuration; it does not by itself establish shipping performance.
Document control and ownership
Start the specification with the controls that identify the approved configuration:
- Buyer name and RFQ or purchase-order number.
- Packaging specification number and revision.
- Covered sock styles, buyer item numbers, and SKUs.
- Referenced artwork and assortment-matrix revisions.
- Units of measurement, issue date, and approving party.
- Required implementation lot, shipment, or production date.
Use these status labels throughout the document:
- **Buyer-defined:** The RFQ states the value, tolerance, measurement method, and acceptance rule.
- **Supplier-proposed:** The supplier documents the proposal; written buyer approval is required before bulk packing.

Specify the pack-out hierarchy
Write the configuration from the individual unit through the master carton:

Reconcile the approved carton quantity to the purchase order:

State whether partial cartons are prohibited, permitted with a separate identifier, or subject to an approved alternate configuration. Do not leave remainder packing to supplier convention.
For mixed sizes, colors, or styles, attach a revision-controlled assortment matrix. It should identify the buyer item number, SKU, quantity per individual unit, quantity per inner pack, quantity per carton, carton allocation, destination allocation where applicable, and whether substitutions, balancing, or overpacking are prohibited.
Define the individual sock unit
Specify the smallest sellable or distributable pack independently from the sock construction details.
Record the required pair count, fold or arrangement, outward-facing design area, alignment of the two socks, allowed attachment method, and buyer-defined prohibited conditions. An approved drawing or reference photograph is useful where fold direction, attachment placement, or presentation orientation could be interpreted differently.
For finished packed dimensions, enter length, width, thickness, unit of measurement, tolerance type, and measurement state. State whether the unit is measured after closure, on a flat surface, without intentional compression. Where a fixture, load, or other condition affects the measurement, include it in the inspection method.
For each selected presentation component, define the following:
- Component type: belly band, hang tag, header card, individual carton, protective bag, approved combination, or none.
- Material and construction, or a supplier proposal requiring approval.
- Finished dimensions, tolerances, color, finish, print coverage, and artwork revision.
- Closure or attachment method, position, and orientation.
- Contact surfaces facing the socks.
- Required opening, vent, perforation, or seal details.
- Prohibited exposed adhesive, sharp edges, snagging points, holes, or deformation.
A component name alone does not define its material, dimensions, attachment method, or acceptance criteria.
Control inner packs, cartons, and shipping protection
The inner-pack entry should state the individual-unit count, total pair count, SKU separation rule, material, dimensions, closure, unit orientation, allowed movement control, label fields, and label position.
For a single-SKU inner pack, state the rule directly: *One SKU per inner pack. Mixed sizes, colors, and buyer item numbers are prohibited.* For an assortment, reference the approved matrix revision and prohibit substitutions not listed in that matrix.
The master-carton section should define:

When carton construction is supplier-proposed, request the details needed to evaluate it, such as material or wall construction, internal and external dimensions, joint method, closure style, and any buyer-required supporting record. Do not accept *standard export carton* as a complete carton specification.
Link every protection component to an identified condition and to evidence that the buyer can review:

Do not describe the pack-out as *waterproof*, *moisture-proof*, *crush-proof*, or *transit-safe* unless the buyer supplies a test procedure, test conditions, and pass-or-fail criteria for that claim.
Make marks, approval, and inspection specific
Carton marks should be controlled by artwork or a field-and-placement specification. Include only buyer-required fields, such as purchase-order number, buyer item number or SKU, style, size, color, carton quantity, destination code, origin text, dimensions, gross weight, carton sequence, and buyer-specified barcode data.
For each carton label or mark, define the data source, dimensions, orientation, carton side, placement limits, seam-crossing rule, human-readable content, and scan-check procedure where applicable.
Before bulk packing, approve the complete configuration that will be used for production. The approval package can include the printed-component proof, finished individual unit, completed inner pack, representative filled master carton, measured dimensions, weights, carton-mark records, protection-placement photographs, and any buyer-required test report.
The approval record should identify the sock SKU, sample date, packaging specification revision, artwork revision, assortment-matrix revision, measured values, approved deviations, approving party, and approval date.
Use an explicit change-control statement:
