Private Label Sock Size Charts by US, EU and UK Markets

Private Label Sock Size Charts by US, EU and UK Markets

A custom sock size chart is not a design extra. It is a buying tool, a packaging claim, and a factory control sheet. US, EU, and UK shoe sizes do not match cleanly, so private label brands should start with foot length in centimeters, then confirm the chart on washed fit samples. Bad charts create returns fast. One wide adult range can hide a 4 cm foot length gap. That is too much for terry, wool, and compression socks.

Table of Contents

Build the chart from foot length, not shoe size labels

Use foot length in centimeters as the master value. Shoe size labels are for shoppers. Centimeters are for sampling, grading, and inspection. A US men's 9 is often sold near EU 42 and UK 8, but retailer conversions vary. The sock still has to fit a real foot.

A practical adult starting point for a custom sock size chart is below. Confirm it after the first sample is knitted, washed, boarded, and measured.

Do not copy a footwear chart onto sock packaging without testing stretch and recovery. A 2 cm flat foot length difference can change fit more than one shoe size label suggests.

Packaging should lead with the local shoe size system. US packs should show US men's, US women's, or kids sizing. EU packs should show EU 35 to 38, 39 to 42, or 43 to 46. UK packs should not reuse US numbers, because adult UK sizing is usually about one size lower than US men's sizing.

Keep the technical file more exact than the retail label. A front panel may say "Fits US Men 8 to 12." The factory chart should say foot length 26.0 to 30.0 cm, flat sock foot 21.5 cm after boarding, leg height 20.0 cm, top opening 8.5 cm laid flat, and tolerance plus or minus 0.5 cm on foot length.

For ecommerce, show US, EU, and UK in one table. For retail shelves, put the main market size on the front and the conversion chart on the back or side panel. Check artwork before bulk printing. Reprinting header cards or belly bands after approval can add 7 to 14 days and often costs USD 80 to USD 300, depending on quantity and paper stock.

Match size breaks to sock construction

Construction changes fit. A 200 needle dress sock with combed cotton and spandex can feel tighter than a 144 needle cushioned crew sock with the same size label. Terry loops take up internal space. Wool blends can shrink more after washing. Compression socks need pressure targets, not casual sock ranges.

Write the custom sock size chart after wash testing. A cotton blend sock may change 3 percent to 6 percent in length after one wash. A wool blend can move more if the yarn and wash method are not fixed.

Use tighter ranges where returns cost more

One size fits most can work for low price promo socks when yarn stretch is high and return risk is low. It is a poor choice for wool hiking socks, padded running socks, ski socks, and gift boxes sold at higher margins. Wider ranges reduce SKU count. They also raise fit complaints.

For adult retail, two or three size breaks are usually better than one. A simple US plan is Women S 5 to 7, Women M 7 to 10, Men L 8 to 11, and Men XL 11 to 14. A common EU plan is 35 to 38, 39 to 42, 43 to 46, and 47 to 49 for large sizes. For UK, use 3 to 5, 5 to 7, 7 to 10, and 10 to 13 when the range needs four breaks.

Kids sizing needs extra care. Age is a weak measure. A 6 year old may have a 17.0 cm foot or a 20.0 cm foot. Use age as a support line only. Better packaging uses foot length and EU size, such as 4 to 6 years, foot length 16.5 to 18.5 cm, EU 27 to 30.

Put inspection rules inside the size chart file

A factory chart should define what gets measured, when it gets measured, and what counts as a defect. Use one approved sample as the control. Measure after washing if the care label says machine wash. Measure laid flat without pulling unless the method calls for stretch measurement.

Major defects include wrong size label, wrong market conversion, holes, broken elastic, heavy color mismatch, and mixed sizes in one polybag. Minor defects include loose thread ends, small oil marks within the agreed limit, and slight boarding marks that do not affect wear.

Plan sampling, MOQ, pricing, and revision timing early

Size chart work should be finished before bulk yarn booking and packaging printing. At ZheSock in Datang, Zhejiang, private label sampling usually takes 7 to 12 days after artwork, yarn, needle count, and size range are confirmed. Terry, wool blend, heavy jacquard, and compression samples usually take 10 to 18 days because yarn setup and fit testing take longer.

MOQ starts at 100 pairs for many private label test orders. Larger production orders are often 500 to 1,000 pairs per color for standard yarns, and 3,000 pairs or more when custom dyed yarn or custom packaging is required. Bulk production commonly takes 25 to 45 days after sample approval and deposit. Add 5 to 10 days if paper packaging needs a new print run.

Factory pricing often falls in these ranges before freight and duty: basic cotton ankle or crew socks at USD 0.60 to USD 1.20 per pair, cushioned sports socks at USD 1.10 to USD 2.50, wool blend hiking socks at USD 2.80 to USD 5.50, and light compression socks at USD 1.80 to USD 4.20 depending on pressure level and yarn. OEKO-TEX material options are available when the buyer needs tested inputs. Certifications such as BSCI, Sedex, ISO 9001, GOTS, GRS, and CE should be discussed by product type and order requirement, not used as sizing claims in a sock size conversion chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best base for a custom sock size chart?

Use foot length in centimeters. Then map that range to US, EU, and UK sizes for packaging. In production, measure the actual sock after washing and boarding, not just the shoe size label.

Can the same sock be sold in US, EU, and UK markets?

Yes, if the physical fit works for the target foot length range. Change the printed size chart by market. For example, one sock may be sold as US men 8 to 12, EU 41 to 46, and UK 7 to 11.

How many sizes should a private label sock range use?

For basic adult casual socks, two sizes can work. For sports socks, wool socks, and compression socks, three or four sizes usually cut fit complaints. For kids, use foot length first and age second.

When should the size chart be approved?

Approve it only after the fit sample is knitted, washed, boarded, and measured. A spreadsheet is not enough. Terry thickness, elastic tension, and shrinkage can change the final fit by more than 1 cm.

Do certifications decide sock sizing?

No. OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS, BSCI, Sedex, ISO 9001, and CE do not set sock size. Sizing comes from foot length, construction, stretch, and market labeling.
