From Mockup to Mass Production: Custom Sock Timeline Explained

How long does it really take to go from a sock idea to product on your shelf? In our 17 years of OEM/ODM work, we have learned that managing client expectations on timeline is more important than almost any other factor in a successful partnership. Below is the realistic, no-padding stage-by-stage timeline from initial concept to your warehouse receiving the finished cartons.

Table of Contents

Phase 1: Inquiry to Quotation (1-3 days)

You contact a factory with your project brief. A professional B2B factory will respond within 12 hours during business hours with:

If they take more than 48 hours, that is a red flag for poor communication going forward. Use this stage to evaluate communication quality, it predicts the entire relationship.

Phase 2: Design Discussion (3-7 days)

If you are OEM with finished tech packs, this phase is shorter. If ODM or starting from concept, this is where the factory design team gets involved.

Typical deliverables in this phase:

Iteration is normal, expect 2-4 mockup rounds before sign-off. Each round adds 1-2 days.

Phase 3: Pre-Production Sample (5-10 days)

Once design is signed off, the factory produces a physical sample, usually 2-3 pairs, on the actual production machinery with the actual yarn. This is the moment of truth.

Timeline breakdown:

Reasonable factories charge 50-200 USD for the sample, refunded against bulk order. Insist on receiving the actual sample, photos and videos can hide flaws.

Phase 4: Sample Approval and Revisions (1-14 days)

This phase varies enormously based on your project. Best case: you receive the sample, love it, and sign off the same day. Worst case: you find issues requiring a full re-sample, which restarts Phase 3.

Common revision triggers:

Smart practice: sign off only after wearing the sock for at least 8 hours and washing it once.

Phase 5: Bulk Production (15-30 days)

The longest single phase. Bulk production timeline depends on:

Approximate ranges at a well-run factory:

Phase 6: Quality Control and Finishing (3-5 days)

After knitting, every pair goes through:

  1. Steam pressing on sock boards (1-2 days for whole order)
  2. Visual inspection and quality grading
  3. Pairing and matching
  4. Packaging insertion (hangtags, sleeves, bags)
  5. Carton packing with weight/quantity verification
  6. Pre-shipment inspection (internal or third-party)

If a third-party inspection (SGS, BV, Intertek) is booked, add 2-3 days for scheduling and inspector visit.

Phase 7: Export Documentation (2-4 days)

While the goods are at the factory, customs paperwork is prepared:

For DDP shipments, the factory also handles destination customs.

Phase 8: International Shipping (5-35 days)

Final phase varies most by destination:

Add 2-5 days for destination customs clearance and inland delivery to your warehouse.

Total Realistic Timeline

Sum of all phases for a typical first-time OEM project:

Always build a 2-3 week buffer for unexpected issues. If you have a hard launch date (holiday season, trade show), work backward and start the project 90 days minimum before launch.

Ways to Compress the Timeline

If your timeline is tight, here are the proven shortcuts:

Most experienced B2B factories can compress a standard project to 30-40 days using these techniques, but expect to pay 15-30% premium for the speed.
