FOB Free on Board The Default Term
Under FOB, the factory price includes everything up to loading the goods onto the ship at the China port (usually Ningbo, Shanghai, or Shenzhen). From that moment the buyer owns the goods and the risk. The buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight, insurance, destination port charges, customs clearance, duties, and inland delivery. FOB is the most common term for established buyers with their own freight forwarder.EXW Ex Works The Factory Door
Under EXW, the factory price is at the factory door only. The buyer is responsible for export customs at Chinese side, trucking to port, and everything after. EXW is rare in practice because export customs requires a Chinese tax-registered entity, which most overseas buyers do not have. We almost never quote EXW.CIF Cost Insurance Freight Factory Handles Shipping
Under CIF, the factory price includes ocean freight to the destination port plus marine insurance. The buyer takes over at the destination port for customs clearance and inland delivery. CIF is convenient for buyers who do not have a freight forwarder relationship yet, but the factory typically marks up freight 10 to 20 percent for the service.DDP Delivered Duty Paid Door-to-Door Service
Under DDP, the price includes everything door to door including destination duties. The buyer receives the goods at their warehouse without lifting a finger on logistics. We offer DDP to USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia for orders over 500 kg. DDP USA via our channel is approximately USD 1.80 to USD 2.40 per kg all-in for general cargo.Sea Freight LCL vs FCL Decision Point
LCL (Less than Container Load) is shared container space, priced per cubic meter. Use LCL when your order is under 15 cubic meters. FCL (Full Container Load) is your own dedicated container. 20-foot container holds about 28 cubic meters, 40-foot holds about 58 cubic meters. The cost breakeven is roughly 14 to 16 cubic meters depending on lane.Sock Volume Reference Pairs Per Cubic Meter
Standard packaging assumption: 1 carton holds 120 to 200 pairs depending on sock weight. 1 carton occupies about 0.04 cubic meter. 1 cubic meter holds about 25 cartons, or roughly 3,000 to 5,000 pairs. A full 40-foot container holds approximately 150,000 to 250,000 pairs. Use these numbers to estimate your shipping density when planning orders.Air Freight When Speed Beats Cost
Air freight costs about 10 to 15 times sea freight per kilogram but arrives in 5 to 8 days vs 25 to 35 days for sea. Use air for samples, urgent restocks, or high-margin product launches. Standard air freight from Shanghai to LAX runs USD 5.50 to USD 8.00 per kg. Express courier runs USD 7 to USD 12 per kg but includes door-to-door customs clearance.USA Customs Duties on Socks The Numbers
Socks fall under HTS code 6115 with duty rates ranging from 13.5 to 18.8 percent for most categories. Cotton socks (6115.95) at 13.5 percent. Synthetic socks (6115.96) at 14.6 percent. Wool socks (6115.94) at 11.6 percent. MPF (merchandise processing fee) 0.3464 percent and HMF (harbor maintenance fee) 0.125 percent also apply.EU Customs Duties on Socks
EU general duty on socks under CN 6115 is 12 percent across most categories. VAT is added on top at the destination country rate (19 to 25 percent). UK post-Brexit applies similar 12 percent duty plus 20 percent VAT. For brands selling B2C in EU, registering for IOSS is recommended to simplify VAT collection on small parcels. Our Recommendation by Order Size
Sample order under 50 pairs: DHL express, USD 60 to USD 120 total. First production order 500 to 2,000 pairs: DDP via our channel. Established 5,000 plus pairs per order: FOB with your forwarder, you negotiate best rates. Container-load orders: FCL FOB, plus you handle insurance independently for better rate.Frequently Asked Questions
