Terry Cushion Socks: Partial, Full and No Cushion Cost

Published: 2026-07-02By ZheSock TeamReading time: 5 min
Terry Cushion Socks: Partial, Full and No Cushion Cost

Terry cushion socks should never be quoted as one standard item. No cushion, partial cushion, and full cushion use different yarn weight, machine time, boarding settings, packing volume, and freight space. For an adult crew sock, the same design can move from USD 0.55 to USD 1.30 per pair based on cushion coverage, needle count, yarn content, and order size. Ask for grams per pair and a clear cushion map before you compare prices.

Table of Contents

No Cushion, Partial Cushion, and Full Cushion Price Ranges

For cotton rich adult crew socks at 3,000 to 10,000 pairs per color, no cushion often lands at USD 0.55 to 0.90 per pair. Partial cushion usually runs USD 0.68 to 1.08. Full cushion is commonly USD 0.82 to 1.30. These ranges assume standard export packing, 144N to 200N knitting, and no added fiber certification cost.

The main price gap comes from weight. A no cushion adult crew sock is often 45 to 60 grams per pair. Partial cushion is usually 55 to 75 grams. Full cushion can reach 70 to 95 grams. If you switch to combed cotton or recycled polyester, the cost moves up again.

Do not compare two quotes unless the supplier lists cushion coverage, pair weight, needle count, yarn content, packing method, and carton quantity. Without those details, the price means very little.

Why Terry Cushion Socks Use More Yarn and More Time

Terry cushion socks use extra yarn because the machine forms loop piles inside the sock during knitting. This is not a brushed finish added later. The loop structure is built on the machine. Partial cushion can add about 8 to 18 percent more yarn than a flat knit version. Full cushion can add 18 to 35 percent more.

Machine output drops as cushion coverage increases. A stable 168N no cushion crew sock may produce about 280 to 320 pairs in 24 hours on one machine. A similar partial cushion sock often runs 230 to 280 pairs. Dense full cushion may fall to 190 to 240 pairs, especially with thicker yarn or higher elastic tension.

Finishing also needs tighter control. Heavy terry socks usually need slower boarding heat and careful drying to keep size stable. A common boarding range is 105 to 120 degrees Celsius, adjusted by yarn and thickness. If the sock is stretched too hard on the board, foot length may pass inspection but shrink back after washing. That turns into a fit complaint later. It is expensive.

Needle Count, Grams Per Pair, and Yarn Choice

Most terry cushion socks are made on 144N, 156N, 168N, or 200N machines. A 144N sock gives a thicker feel and is common in workwear. A 168N sock is widely used for athletic crews. A 200N sock gives a cleaner outer surface, but dense terry on 200N needs finer yarn and tighter tension control.

Buyers often ask for GSM, but socks are usually controlled by grams per pair. That is the more useful production number because socks are tube knit and shaped. If a buyer still wants a fabric weight comparison, a lab can cut a measured area and estimate GSM. Many cushion zones test around 320 to 520 GSM equivalent, but grams per pair remains the better buying spec.

Yarn choice changes cost fast. A common makeup is 75 percent cotton, 22 percent polyester, and 3 percent elastane or spandex. Moving from carded cotton to combed cotton can add about USD 0.05 to 0.12 per pair at medium volume. GRS recycled polyester, GOTS organic cotton, and custom dyed yarn can push cost higher. MOQ may also rise because the yarn mill may require its own minimum dye lot.

Which Cushion Level Fits Each Product Type

Partial cushion is the most practical option for many B2B programs. It adds padding under the foot without making the instep and leg too bulky. For running, gym, school, and casual crew socks, buyers often choose partial terry on the sole with reinforced heel and toe.

Full cushion works better for boot socks, hiking socks, winter socks, and workwear. The tradeoff is volume. A full cushion sock may feel better in a boot, but too tight in a low volume sneaker. That matters. It can drive returns.

For private label terry cushion socks, approve the cushion map before strike off. Mark the terry area in the tech pack by zone, such as sole only, sole plus toe, full foot, or full leg.

MOQ, Sampling, and Production Lead Time

For simple development, ZheSock can start from 100 pairs when available yarn and basic packaging are used. For normal custom production, better pricing usually starts at 1,000 to 3,000 pairs per style. If the order has three colors and three sizes, the factory still needs to check whether each split is large enough for efficient knitting and packing.

Sampling usually takes 5 to 10 days after artwork, size, yarn content, and cushion map are confirmed. A second sample may be needed if the first sock feels too tight, comes out too heavy, or shows logo stretch on the rib. Bulk production is commonly 25 to 40 days after sample approval and deposit. In peak months, plan around 45 days. Custom dyed yarn, GOTS cotton, GRS yarn, or special retail packaging can add 7 to 15 days.

A useful quote sheet should list MOQ, unit price, sample time, bulk lead time, needle count, grams per pair, yarn composition, carton size, pairs per carton, and AQL level. If those points are missing, the quote is incomplete.

Quality Control and Cost Control That Actually Matter

Good terry cushion socks are controlled at knitting, linking, boarding, and final inspection. During knitting, operators check loop height, dropped stitches, elastic tension, and terry coverage. During linking, they check toe seams for lumps and missed loops. After boarding, inspectors measure foot length, leg length, welt width, and pair weight.

For bulk inspection, many importers use AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects. Critical defects should be zero tolerance. Common major defects include wrong size, holes, broken elastic, severe oil marks, and mixed colors. Minor defects include small yarn knots, slight shade variation within approved tolerance, and loose threads that do not affect wear.

To cut cost, test partial cushion before full cushion. In many cotton rich crew socks, that can save about USD 0.08 to 0.18 per pair. At 10,000 pairs, that is USD 800 to 1,800 before freight. Standard packing also matters. A belly band may add USD 0.02 to 0.05 per pair. A paper hook can add USD 0.03 to 0.08. A printed polybag can add USD 0.04 to 0.10. Small packing choices add up fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is full cushion always worth the higher cost?

No. Full cushion adds more padding and warmth, but it also adds bulk, weight, and carton volume. For tight sneakers, partial cushion often fits better and costs less. Full cushion makes more sense for boots, hiking socks, winter socks, and workwear.

How much more does partial cushion cost than no cushion?

For adult cotton rich crew socks, partial cushion often adds about USD 0.10 to 0.20 per pair compared with no cushion at 3,000 to 10,000 pairs per color. The gap comes from higher yarn use, slower machine output, and slightly heavier freight weight.

What MOQ should a new sock brand expect?

For simple development with available yarn and basic packaging, ZheSock can start from 100 pairs. For normal custom terry cushion socks, 1,000 to 3,000 pairs per style is a more realistic MOQ if you want workable unit cost and stable production planning.

What AQL level is common for terry cushion socks?

A common setup is AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects, with zero tolerance for critical defects. Wrong size, holes, broken elastic, and wrong color packing should be treated as major issues.

Which certificates can apply to cushion sock orders?

The terry structure itself does not need a special certificate. Depending on the yarn, factory, and market, buyers may request OEKO-TEX, BSCI, Sedex, ISO 9001, GOTS, GRS, or CE where relevant. The document should match the actual product, material, and order scope.
