Merino wool works well when the buyer wants a natural fiber story and real cold-weather performance. The best yarn grade for socks is usually 17 to 19 micron. That gives a much smoother hand than coarse wool. It still needs a nylon or polyester carrier for shape and wear life, because 100 percent merino socks pill fast, thin out sooner, and cost more. For hiking and ski socks, a common starting point is 40 to 60 percent merino, 30 to 50 percent nylon, and 2 to 5 percent elastane. For executive dress socks, 30 to 50 percent merino is often enough.
Price usually lands around $1.8 to $4.5 per pair at MOQ 200, depending on yarn count, knit density, terry thickness, heel and toe reinforcement, and whether you want full terry or just targeted cushioning. Real certification questions matter more than slogans. Ask for OEKO-TEX if skin contact and chemical control matter to your market. If you want a traceable wool program, GOTS only fits if the wool is certified organic from the source. GRS is relevant only when recycled content is part of the blend. Good for premium DTC, outdoor brands, and cold-weather corporate gifts. Not a fit if the buyer wants the lowest possible unit cost.
